WCS' Bakari Center is a Type-II Residential Care Center for up to 24 boys between the ages of 13 to 17 years old. Youth are court ordered to Bakari Center based on involvement in the juvenile justice system and their mental health needs. Most youth are enrolled for approximately six months. At the center, youth receive individualized learning through an on-line educational program provided by Norris Academy at the center during weekdays.
Bakari Center utilizes the Integrated Treatment Model (ITM), an evidenced-based approach that provides treatment to the youth including interpersonal effectiveness, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and Dialectical Behavior Treatment (DBT) while also providing broad-spectrum treatment for the youth’s family and/or at-home caregivers. Specifically the treatment focuses on: critical thinking skills; self-regulation; problem-solving; Mindfulness; goal setting; interpersonal relationships; and enhancing caregiver confidence.
Prior to youth leaving the center, families also are trained in these treatment models to create continuity of skills development for youth. Families receive Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST) in order to develop their skills in meeting the youth’s needs.
This programming is provided in partnership with Milwaukee County.
